That is the trouble with half term holidays, you are either busy entertaining the kids, or they are stealing the computer right from under your nose and entertaining themselves warping pictures of Britney Spears or Bebo'ing. So I haven't managed to blog, and I don't have my film list for today. I didn't want to do one after another, I'd like to blog about other stuff too just in case it gets boring!
I have been going a bit 1940's mad this week though. When I have managed to get any online time I found a few videos on youtube how to do forties hairstyles but because I have curly long hair it's not so easy, I am aiming to practice on L. She has lovely straight hair!!
L has once again being watching 'The 1940's house' to pass some rainy day time today. Though we did make chocolate Krispies!!
1 rounded tablespoon of sugar (1oz)
half an oz of cocoa or drinking chocolate.
2 cups cornflakes or krispies.
1 rounded tablespoon golden syrup.
2oz butter.
15 cake cases.

Warm sugar, syrup and butter in a pan on a low heat, until melted.
Take off the heat and stir in the cocoa and mix well.
Pour mixture onto krispies and mix well.
Spoon into bun cases and leave to set!

Anyway back to 1940's stuff, I have joined a couple of yahoo groups, one called paperdolls (love the name!) which is women talking about the 1940's look and other subjects like that. And 'homefront friends'. This group has a lot of members who do 1940's re enactments. I have yet to do anything like this but it is something I would eventually like to have a go at... when I have got up courage to go!!
I have also being longing to go here: Eden camp. I love this place and I do get the urge to go to it a lot, (I'd love to work there). The best part of it for me is hut 33 which is the prefab (if you go to the site map on the link above, it will show you all the huts which were actual POW huts). Looking in there brings back so many memories of my Grandparents house! I love the rag rugs they have in there, and would love to learn how to make them. Although I don't know if I'd have the patience. My Grandma and Grandad used to sit and make them on an evening for entertainment as my Grandad wouldn't have a tv and would only listen to the radio for news.
Finally I watched Atonement.
What a sad, sad film. I cried buckets and in the end had to sit with the box of tissues on my knee so I didn't have to get up every five minutes to get another. I'm still not that keen on Keira Knightly though, She always looks to waif-like for me, but I loved how they used the typewriter as part of the background soundtrack.Hopefully I will be able to catch up with the blog a bit next week when L is back at school. Have a great weekend everyone!!

Hi Jennie,
My kids are past the age of needing entertaining now so I get a bit of time to myself at half-term (working in a school I have to take my holidays during school holidays), but still I didn't get much done this week! I like the 1940s too, I've just won the "We'll meet again" tv series on DVD from Ebay which I'm looking forward to watching, I remember loving it when it was being aired. I find it such a poignant decade, sad but uplifting too, and everyone suffered so much but also had a fantastic war-time spirit which got them through. I'm hoping to holiday in Yorkshire this summer and Eden Camp is on my list of places to visit so thanks for the recommendation. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Gill
I always enjoy looking at the 1940s 'stuff' in the gift shop at Duxford - though from talking to my parents (children of the 30s) I am very glad I wasn't actually living through it.
Atonement is my favourite film of the last few years. I haven't cried so hard since Truly Madly Deeply!
I only have one to entertain during the half term but her older siblings often take on the role themselves, but I still don't get a lot done. I love 1940s and
1950s fashion, but not the underwear!
Thanks for your comment on my blog, the vegetable growing is quite easy, it's the 1st year I have done it so I should not blow my own trumpet yet as I have not eaten anything yet!
Looking back I think I should of grown the spuds in compost bags just so I could keep burying the spuds as they were growing.
Filey's great as it is not commercialised at all and the beach is fab!
I have not watched attonment yet as I hate Keira, she spoilt my favourite film, Pride & Prejudice.
I hope you get a bit of time on the internet today!
I love the 1940s, people looked so much more sophisticated back then. Eden camp sounds like a great place to visit.
Thank you so much for joining in with my russian doll swap, I will send details out shortly!
Hi Jennie, ted is very happy in his new home, thank you so much for him! Eden camp sounds like a great place, thanks for sharing that with us.
Have a good week,
Lucy x
I have this real problem with Keira... several of her films are on my favourite list, but I hate her, irrationally. All teeth and no t..... well, you get the picture. I haven't seen Atonement but I want to.... I may possibly get the dvd this Friday as a cheer me up present. Do you think it will work?
Hi gill: I fully reccomend Eden camp so let me know if you like! I'll have to look out for the 'We'll meet again' series or add it to my growing list!
DottyCookie: I think I possibly cried as much for Truly Madly Deeply too!!
Alison: I did get a day off this week as the youngest went to the beach with her brother and girlfriend so there is a bonus to having older kids!
Vanessa: Jennifer Ehle will always be the best Lizzie Bennet as far as I am concerned!!
I'm going to keep my eye on your blog for veg growing tips ;)
Katy: You are welcome, it looks like great fun, although I have no idea how I am going to make a Russian doll yet. :/
Lucy: I'm glad the ted has settled in at yours! Hope you have had a great weekend!
Jo: I don't think you could class Atonement as a cheering up movie ;) I feel the same about Keira, I love Pirates of the Caribbean but her pout just gets on my nerves!!
Eden Camp - the Football Fanatic's favourite school trip EVER! I think she went in Year 4, and she's been talking about it ever since!
I love the 1940s. Loved too Atonement but not as much as the book (James McAvoy was great, agree with you about KK). Wasn't the house wonderful in Atonement too1
Kimx
Jackie: I'm glad the Football Fanatic liked it so much! That's long lasting memories!
Kim: Loved James McAvoy in it as well but then I liked him in Shameless ;)
I did think I'd like to read the book and see how different it was to the film. I think you would get more from the book. And the house was fantastic!
It's really easy to get sucked into that time period! I watched a preview for a new movie (looks similar to Atonement) called, I think, The Edge of Love.
I love reading about the '40's...
I've always wanted to have a '30's-'40's kitchen...my Mom, who grew up in that time thinks I'm a bit crazy...she just grins and shakes her head!
I haven't watched Atonement, yet...I may try to rent a copy for this weekend.
Hope you have a lovely week,
Pam
Jennie, I love anything 1940's and I loved seeing all your books on your bookshelf about the subject. What fun! I might have to check out that paperdolls group.
I too cried buckets and buckets during Atonement. I absolutely sobbed - even though I had read the book and knew what was going on.
I with you on Keira. I don't think she was particularly right for the film.
I think her look is too modern for period films. I thought that after Pride and Prejudice as well.
Still can't figure out why that film was made. As if a 2 hour film would ever measure up to the BBC series.
