making stuff, making memories.

Now my kids are older, I look back with fond memories to all the things I have had to help them make for school and other various projects. The wigwam for L last year, mobiles, paintings, face masks, costumes, you name it we've done it. We had a masked ball party for L one year where mask invitations were sent out and all the kids came to my house sporting home made masks. A butterfly ball the next year complete with butterfly cake and children with butterfly wings. I am pretty sure I did themed parties for J too, but cannot for the life of me remember offhand what they were.
I also remember my parents made a lot of things for my brother and me too when we were young. I know we had a R2D2 made out of a yogurt pot, silver paper and a blue ball. And a K-9 made out of a cardboard box but which was the spitting image of the real thing. I also remember being delighted when I awoke and came downstairs one morning and both my parents had made paper boats out of the Rupert the bear annual my brother had got one Christmas.
I don't actually think they made them for us, they were just messing around late at night but I still thought they were the best parents in the world.
So with joy the other night I once again I enjoyed the delights of my child telling me at eight o clock at night that she needed tea-stained burnt paper for her work at school the next day. So I duly got out the teabags, stained the paper, left it to dry overnight and then tried to set fire to the kitchen whilst cooking paper and breakfast the next day.
But she was pleased with the results. Similarly I was asked a day before needed, for a gravestone (although I do have vague recollections of someone mentioning this repeatedly but I thought it was a voice in my head or an annoying fly buzzing at me I guess). So today, I trotted to see my friend who works in a picture framing shop and managed to sneak some marble card offcuts out of there without paying vast amounts of money... well none... This afternoon whilst trying to sort out my money situation (single parent advisor's are supposed to help single parents right? not make their lives more difficult!) I managed to cobble together a gravestone of sorts and then I stole some ivy from peoples gardens when I had to rush to pick up my daughter. This is the end result. The writing leaves a lot to be desired but it will do for a drama lesson.
Also today, (not making anything this time). I spied this little mouse cheese board in a charity shop as I passed and could not resist buying him.
He will look very fine on my red and white Christmas table this year.

Elsewhere I am planning to make a Halloween party tea so any suggestions for Halloween type food or decoration would be greatly received.
I had though about getting this fella for the window,
but think I may give the old people in a the street a heart attack! You can find lots of strange items at this site!
p.s Kitty, your bunny is boxed up and ready to go, I just need to email you for your address and I promise you she will reach you before Halloween!

What lovely memories. Dont mothers have to be clever and creative whether they have the ability or means to do so. Some easy halloween food? Now I dont have children, but I did used to be a child minder if that counts so here goes. 1.Chocolate fairy cakes, with orange icing spread on top and pipe black icing spiders webs, or top with a spooky haribo jelly sweet. 2.Make a batch of meringue mixture and pipe out in the shape of bones. 3. A bowl of different coloured jellies, when set mash each colour up with a fork, mix together and drop in jelly snakes and worms and things, have a few hanging over the edge of the bowl as if they are wriggling out. 4.Lemonade with red food colouring added to look like blood. 5.Thinly slice apples, fry in butter for a few minutes, add some vanilla extract turn over and cook a few minutes more. Serve sprinkled with sugar. 6.Make a cookie dough, pipe out finger shapes, put an almond on the end to look like a finger nail, when cooked paint the almond with red food colouring. Then the usual things with cocktail sausages and blood (ketchup). Well thats what Mr K is having for tea tonight. LOL!

Great headstone. I always make monster burgers by making a face on the bun, using cheese slices cut into pointed teeth shapes, ketchup and peas for eyes etc.
Love the mouse cheeseboard btw.

Funny you should be posting about tea stained burnt paper as I have just finished doing exactly the same. Lesson plans the world over it would seem remain the same.
Love your mouse cheeseboard

I'm glad I'm not the only one gearing up for Halloween. I love your gravestone. :-)

I think I had the same wired covered in foam Rupert when I were little.

One year I did mushy peas and called them "mouldy eye balls", cherry ade "blood", rice "maggot eggs" and dead man's stew. The children loved it. I think there was short bread finger biscuits wrapped in bandages for pudding "mummy's toes".

This year one is off to a fright night with friends to a local farm. I did like it when they were younger.

Have you been hanging around outside my house and taking photos of me through the bedroom window, I look pretty hot in my bandages in the photo, don't I? Anyhoo making memories is the best isn't it? we did some of that today. I remember doing the most simple things with my Mum and Granny (who died when I was only 7:( and we always had such fun. I feel you never remember the gifts you were given as a child but the time you were given and try to do lots of stuff with wee Twiglet. I love your little mousey.
Headstone looks great, we had to make aged maps for a school project and singed them under the grill also set fire to the tea towel on top of the cooker and melted a plastic tray, Mum was soooo pleased :)

That mummy would look great in an upstairs window, just a shame I live in a bungalow! Wasn't there instructions on origami inside the Rupert annuals! I think I remember your mouse dish being sold in Boots originally, I am sure my mum had one? If I see any easy halloween recipes, I shall let you know, enjoy your tea. x

This is very timely as we have to make a model of our house this week! I love it when they have crafty things to make for school :-)

I love your gravestone - fab job!

I find green jelly with jelly snakes in always goes down well at Hallowe'en.

Good luck with the party food!
